Faenza Majolica Plate with Cherub, 1510/1530

Faenza Majolica Plate with Cherub, 1510/1530

Faenza maiolica plate with a grotesque band painted in vibrant polychrome on a blue background. The central well features a cherub, a decorative motif typical of Italian Renaissance production.

This ornamental style developed very successfully in Faenza between 1507 and 1538. The reverse of the plate is decorated with eccentric shapes in alternating colours.

Work by an anonymous artist, apparently signed with an X symbol.
