Large Ginori Maiolica Plate with Barbarossa, 1855

Large Ginori majolica plate from 1855, made by Giovanni Freppa for Ginori and painted by Francesco Giusti. In the center, Barbarossa is depicted, inspired by an engraving by Lorenzo de Musi from 1535.
The scene is enclosed within a Sienese Renaissance frame with vases, cornucopias, and winged figures. The back features concentric rings and lobes in various colors.
An identical piece was purchased by the Victoria and Albert Museum at the Paris Exhibition of 1855.
